The first comics I ever read featured Power Man and Iron Fist! So seeing that this was the theme for Metrosketchual was a real treat!

Mad Max-Evan

I did mine today, saw that Jose rocked things on time and got his piece up today! I made the background texture using shaving cream and food coloring! I love the post-apocalyptic nature of Mad Max because it inspired Fist of the North Star!

Savage Dragon

This week was EXTREMELY busy, but how could I pass up doing a Savage Dragon piece. I was able to sneak this in, thinking that I'd be late with it, but I guess I was wrong! ;)

Cronenberg Week-Dead Ringers

It was funny to see this as the week's prompt. My brother and I LOVE David Cronenberg. We celebrate his library on a regular basis. So seeing that someone else thought that this would be a good idea before I did makes me so happy.

I knew that most people would want to go with the obvious Naked Lunch, History of Violence, The Fly, or Scanners. But I didn't want to go so obscure as Shivers. So I went with a family fun-fest ala Dead Ringers. For obvious reasons I went a little more subtle with the subtext in this one. This one gave me nightmares after seeing it!

Dead Presidents-Jackson

I know, I know, WEIRD transition from Crow to Dead Presidents...but hey, it's all good...right?

Anyway, I love drawing Presidents...I'm not a history buff...AT ALL, but in my opinion, presidents are the new pirate, or ninja. They're fun to put in outlandish situations. So I sat down this morning looking at my sheet of all the Presidents, and I thought, who has the rocking-est hair? My choice was Andrew Jackson, the man had an amazing quaff of hair in that bouffant hairstyle. I wanted him to have that Bond/man of action air to him!

So this morning I did this so that I could start things off with a bang!

The Crow

I remember growing up in Indiana, and going to my brother's friend Tim Roger's house, his brother Roy was the biggest Bruce Lee fan. He was a huge fan of Brandon Lee as well, and introduced me to the Crow comics. Then, when I was in high school I picked up the Alex Maleev drawn Crow comics. I always loved how expressive it was. So when I finally got to meet James O'Barr it was a treat, and every time since, he is extremely nice!

With this, I wanted to go with a different approach, I did the drawing about 2 1/2 inches tall, and got a really expressive and better composed design than if I tried to pencil it at full size. Then I scanned the sketch and blew it up on an 11X14 inch sheet and went to town with inks. I wanted to retain the expressive nature of the lines, so I went with a simple textured color approach on the figure and a gradient for the background. In all, tons of fun to work on!

Ghostbusters-Venkman

I did this one traditionally in front of my students. I was taping off the sections near the jagged bits so I could cut them with x-acto to create a clean edge. However, once I saw how the tape looked, it had that collage-vibe to it, which I couldn't deny! The colors were done with some fluid acrylics. You'll notice that I like to change things up a lot depending on what I'm working on.

Evan Bryce

Hi, my name is Evan Bryce, and I am an art teacher here in the greater Metroplex. I've been working in comics since I was in college, starting off as a color production assistant, aka 'flatter' on multiple books, most notably The Hunger for Speakeasy and later Markosia. I had a story in Negative Burn, and I've had pin-ups in books such as Crimeland, Astounding Wolf-Man, Brit, and Supermarket: Cash Money Edition. I am also a frequent contributer on Project Rooftop. I've also had an article on Newsarama.

Right now I am having fun with art, as I have fun with teaching! Being an awesome teacher (the students' words not mine) is a rewarding job, I get to work with amazing students, and I get to be a mentor.
