(p)REVIEW: "God Of Rock" by Paul Milligan

Rock is dead! Or is it? Not if the God of Rock, fresh out of retirement, has anything to say about it. With his trusty ax, his best girl and a few surprising allies on his side, the God of Rock must take on the forces of Anti-Rock and make the world safe once again for Rock, Rebellion and all that other stuff your parents really, really hate.
This God of Rock collection spans over three arcs, each one created on one 24-Hour Comic Day.

Milligan is a polite, bearded, burlyman and very easy to like. He has a fun, consistent drawing style that he can produce quickly and (apparently) with very little sleep. I originally bought God of Rock just to be supportive of a cool local guy, but I must say that God of Rock is oozing with raw talent and humor! As the sales blurb suggests, this 80 page book was written and drawn off the top of the head in three chapters on three subsequent weeks. Not satisfied to participate in the annual 24 Hour Comic Day event (get familiar via the magic of der Wikipedia), Milligan conceived and executed this imperfect but ultimately entertaining tale of Rock gone wrong! You can actually read the comic free, at the Space-Gun Studios site where he's rolling it out as a webcomic and since the banner's calling it a 96 hour comic, I guess he added to it this year! The original 72 hours of Rock is currently in print, and you can order a copy on IndyPlanet!

This week's Sketch theme...

In honor of the fact that local ~~tracer~~ inker John Lucas is working on one of the Spider Island books (where people all over Manhattan end up with Spider-man's powers), The Sketch theme this week (and until I get tired of it) is Spider Island-DFW (I know, DFW isn't an island... it's just a sketch topic, jeez...). So the idea is to draw DFW-based Spider-man art... c'mon, it'll be fun! Well, it will for me. I looooove Spidey (even though I'm not reading his books right now). I posted this old pic of a Spidey convention sketch I did long ago just so this post would have a picture, but I'll submit a REAL Spider-Island DFW piece later in the week!
So anyways, if you need ideas, learn what the Spider-Island thing is about on Marvel's website, then just pretend it's in Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington, etc and draw something sweet!

DFW Cartoonist writes a great article on how to get new readers

A lot of lipservice is paid to "Gaining new readers" but I'm convinced that the major publishers don't really care about growing the overall readership. The majors mostly seem like they just want to take people who are spending more than they can afford on comics and convince them to spend a little more. And they are pretty good at it. But now that they have snagged the low-hanging fruit, let's try some actual marketing...

Marketing is a hobby of mine. I feel fairly confident in saying there is no marketing to speak of in the comics industry. Well, there is marketing to current readers, but not to new readers (or even lapsed readers). Right now, a large number of the general public doesn't even know that comics exist. I meet people and talk to co-workers all the time that are convinced that comics are not printed anymore until I show them a new one. Then there are people who insist that comics are not "for them" even though there are comics on just about every subject, for every audience. Marketing is important because it is the way you find out that you need or want something. The first step to reaching new readers is to let them know you exist! The good news is there is a lot of opportunity out there, and one of our local DFW area cats Vinh-Luan Luu of the mighty Space-Gun Studios crew has figured it out for you. All right Gents and Lady like beings. we got another session for the drink and draw! it is starting to heat up and we need to cool things down. so come chill with us and down some cold ones and do some scribbling. flex some creative muscle or just let loose and go with the flow.

i have announced this before but will emphasize here. the ABOSG's group has set up a sweet 10 dollar figure drawing sessions on tuesdays at Janimation near deep ellum for the next 7 weeks. they had a pretty good turn out and it was all practice. doing 5 minute quick sketches and so on. i highly recommend this for those that are having trouble with anatomy and for those who need to freshen up on your anatomy and gesture drawing skills and for those who just need to get some practice out of good habit. no matter what skill level you are you can always benefit from such sessions. i would like some drink and draw presence there. wickity wack! here is a link to the event info to get address and a little bit more info on it.

The initial image was done using Copic Markers and Col-Erase pencils. I went in Photoshop and finished up the rest (The photoshop part took less than four hours!).

hello... i don't really know what to say. i wanted to introduce myself. on this blog. my name is jose ramirez aka che-che. For the past 7 years i have worked for several production studios doing everything from 3D modeling, photoshop compositions, to concept art and graphic design. Currently i am a 3D modeler and texturer for a military flight simulator company by day. At night i am a freelance illustrator, concept artist, and graphic designer. i consider myself a digital artist. i dabble in it all.

I aslo run Drink and Draw DFW sketchgroup which i started about 2 years ago. When i was in san antone i bought the Drink and Draw Social Club art book. I wondered if dallas had a chapter knowing that there was atleast a handful of comic book artist in the area there surely had to be one. but alas there wasn't. So I went ahead and started the group. Got me self some postcards made and i went to all the comic shops that i knew of and spread the cards around. We had a great response. Thanks to the metroplex artist! We are still going strong. Drink and Draw meets up every other week at the Flying Saucer in North dallas. near belt line and the tollway.

My goals as an artist is to complete several comic book short stories. Do some character designs for an animated series or feature, maybe even a video game. i also have a couple of ideas for video games. which looks more feasable now thanks to smart phones and XBLA.

We are helping some awesome folks put together a wonderful event in Dallas Tx on Jan 22. 2011. Here are the details and a flyer!

“A NATIONWIDE live art event to take place January 22, 2011. Citites all over the country will hold live events that will feature artists you can watch creating art, then bid on their works in an auction and take the art home!

Proceeds from the art sales will go to benefit the Hero Initiative (http://www.heroinitiative.org/), a charity whose mission is to provide financial or medical assistance to the comic creators who gave us their stories, their labor, and their love but all too often ended up without pensions, royalties, or insurance. This is a serious problem for artists who created work in the golden and silver ages of comics, before creators had fair work contracts. Writers and artists who created the characters you cherish are now in their latter years and facing poverty.

Comicpalooza reached out to artlovemagic because of our ties to the local art community and asked us to be involved. I just noticed yesterday that there's new episodes of my boy Josh Boulet's action comedy smash The Green Reefer available FREE on the internet (for medicinal purposes of course), which will appeal to anyone who would like to read a comic best described as "The Tick meets Cheech & Chong" (who wouldn't).

If you're not familiar with Josh, let me start off by telling you he's one of the coolest cats you'll ever meet, and (more importantly) he loves making comics. Besides producing his internationally-recognized (here's looking at YOU, Canada) stoner comic The Green Reefer, Josh has done work in lots of sweet arthouse comics, recently self-published a full-color 115 page werewolf/horror comic The Wrong Night in Texas (click here to read my review), and smashed the art on Amelia Chang Alters the Course of the Universe alongside fellow DFWers Michael Lagocki and Chris Garcia.

Well HELLO!!!!! When we saw that there was a blog dedicated to the comic book world in the DFW metroplex we begged to be apart. After several bribes and deliveries via unmarked bills and various other goodies we have been allowed to post ;) Anyway we will be contributing goodies on here that pertain to the local comic book world such as recent purchases and our reviews of local comic book shops. Greetings everyone. I'm Nate Bramble and I am an independent cartoonist living in the DFW Metroplex. After graduating from the Art Institute in Philadelphia with a degree in cartoon animation several years ago I've worked for some small game design firms and held some freelance web design and marketing design positions.

For the past four years I have been self publishing my own humor based cartoon comic book series for sale over the web, through indie comics shows and local comic shops. I also spent two years writing and drawing the online comic strip Hermit Hill. Along with my own personal projects I have also contributed to some collaboration projects and comics anthologies with other online and local cartoonists.

I am currently drawing single panel cartoons and publishing them to the web through my personal blog with the intention of collecting them into a book series, the first of which is due to be released in the summer of 2011. Mad Max

One image has always stood out apart from all the Mad max movies and the myriad of pretenders. That of a man...handcuffed to a bomb...with a hacksaw...and the words "Bone cuts faster than metal." I see this as the pivotal moment in the movie when we are set down face to face with just how brutal the world has become.
It still gives me shivers to this day.

By the way. My name is Roger A Wilbanks. I am a native Dallas, Texan (I loathe the word Dallasite) who writes and draws comics. I don't do this for a living yet. But I see that as a formality. For my theme for Metrosketchual I submitted Heroes for Hire (yes, I grew up a total Marvel D-list zombie), so I drew the Immortal Iron Fist... in addition to being a leaner, meaner Chuck Norris, good ole Danny Rand was imbued with the power to focus his chi into his fist making it "like a thing of Iron"... which means you can get a sound thrashing no matter who you are, money! I first came into contact with Danny as the not-Luke Cage half of Power Man and Iron Fist back in my childhood. It was one of the gajillion books drawn by John Byrne back in the day when he was my first favorite artist...

Man, I love the Mad Max movies so much. Road Warrior especially, which is what I based Max's look on. And the V8 Interceptor is possibly the coolest movie car of all time. Every once in a while I hear talk of a fourth Max movie, Thunder Road. I would so love to see that movie get made though it would probably be without Mel Gibson at this point. But hey, if they can make a Tron 2 maybe the Road Warrior will ride the white line nightmare once again.

I feel bad for slacking here on this blog. Just been swamped getting the first issue of my new series done. I couldn't pass up the chance to draw the great Savage Dragon, though!

I couldn't tell you why he's leaping out of an explosion--it just seems like it would be a typical occurrence to him. He always personified the larger than life/sky's the limit aspect of comic books to me, so it was fun to take a break from pages to do this!

It's my turn to pick the subject matter, and after missing out on the Umbrella Academy theme thanks to massive deadlines at work it was nice to just sit down and do some sketching.

Savage Dragon is one of my all-time favorite comics. It was awesome in the mid 90's when it launched and it's turned into it's own unique little joy ride ever since.

Erik Larsen channels the ghost of Jack Kirby while keeping up a (semi) monthly schedule on what is to date a 160 issue run. It's great fun, and as it happens in real time (one month in real-time is one month in the book), it's always evolving, changing, and going down new paths. Plus there's death, sex, gratuitous violence and splash pages galore.

I highly recommend it.

Umbrella Academy: Spaceboy & The Rumor

This week's theme is my choice: The Umbrella Academy. It's a series from Dark Horse, by My Chemical Romance singer Gerard Way and Casanova artist Gabriel Ba. I'd always heard good things, but only recently checked out the series for myself. I tore through both volumes--and they're some of my favorite comics in recent memory.

Anyway, I chose to draw two members of the Academy--the Rumor & Spaceboy. I love Spaceboy's look--a guy transplanted into the body of a gorilla--how could that not be cool? And since I'd already drawn the White Violin once before, I wanted to try a rendition of the Rumor.

I highly recommend this series--I can't wait to read more Umbrella Academy comics!

It was funny to see this as the week's prompt. My brother and I LOVE David Cronenberg. We celebrate his library on a regular basis. So seeing that someone else thought that this would be a good idea before I did makes me so happy.

I knew that most people would want to go with the obvious Naked Lunch, History of Violence, The Fly, or Scanners. But I didn't want to go so obscure as Shivers. So I went with a family fun-fest ala Dead Ringers. For obvious reasons I went a little more subtle with the subtext in this one. This one gave me nightmares after seeing it!

Originally someone suggested I do Jefferson Davis for this theme which was a unique idea but I wasn't totally convinced. Of course, once the idea of UNdead presidents popped into my head... well that was that. The zombified bunch includes George Washington, Abraham Lincoln and good old Grover Cleveland. And of course there's tough-talking, zombie-smashing Theodore Roosevelt (not Franklin Roosevelt, the WWII president as I had erroneously put before. Gah, whatta maroon) down there in the corner 'cause really, if there was going to be a zombie hunting president it probably woulda been him right? Bully!

I wrote a story once where Abraham Lincoln has to meet with the King of Atlantis. The Atlanteans give Lincoln 5 years to end slavery or they will invade and wipe out the Union and give North America back to the red man.
Anyways, I really wanted to draw a different President for Metrosketchual, but I couldn't get that story out of my mind, so here's an apprehensive Abe caught between the Confederate army and the Atlantean legions... what's a President to do?

I decided to go a little tongue-in-cheek for this week's theme of 'Dead Presidents.'

This inspiration behind this was the Seinfeld episode, 'The Van Buren Boys' (hence the title). I always laugh at the concept of a street gang that models themselves after President Martin Van Buren. In the episode they are, as Kramer put it, 'every bit as mean as he was.' So I just had the idea to have Van Buren looking sinister, backed up by a couple of homeboys decked out like the man himself.

I hate drawing long hair so I was kind of worried about how this would turn out. Then I decided to use a brush pen for the hair and decided to make it look like feathers. Added the feather texture in Photoshop to complete the effect. Always wanted to do a nice looking Crow piece and I'm really digging the way this turned out.

Anyway, I love drawing Presidents...I'm not a history buff...AT ALL, but in my opinion, presidents are the new pirate, or ninja. They're fun to put in outlandish situations. So I sat down this morning looking at my sheet of all the Presidents, and I thought, who has the rocking-est hair? My choice was Andrew Jackson, the man had an amazing quaff of hair in that bouffant hairstyle. I wanted him to have that Bond/man of action air to him!

So this morning I did this so that I could start things off with a bang!

So this week was my chance to pick the theme. I have always liked the character of The Crow, and I thought it would be a good chance to try an emotionally complex character.

Anywho, this is another test with my quils and ink. I like how this one turned out more than last weeks street fighter.

I remember growing up in Indiana, and going to my brother's friend Tim Roger's house, his brother Roy was the biggest Bruce Lee fan. He was a huge fan of Brandon Lee as well, and introduced me to the Crow comics. Then, when I was in high school I picked up the Alex Maleev drawn Crow comics. I always loved how expressive it was. So when I finally got to meet James O'Barr it was a treat, and every time since, he is extremely nice!

With this, I wanted to go with a different approach, I did the drawing about 2 1/2 inches tall, and got a really expressive and better composed design than if I tried to pencil it at full size. Then I scanned the sketch and blew it up on an 11X14 inch sheet and went to town with inks. I wanted to retain the expressive nature of the lines, so I went with a simple textured color approach on the figure and a gradient for the background. In all, tons of fun to work on!

Here's my sketch! I grew up on Marvel & DC, so I missed the Crow in his heyday. But, I was a fan of the original film with the late Brandon Lee, and I always dug the general dark style of the character. I wanted to go a lot looser with this drawing than I normally do (been reading a lot of comics by Sean Gordon Murphy & John Buscema), so this was a fun one to do!

More experimenting, this time with shapes and inking techniques. The rough pencils were very boxy and I intentionally left the shapes loose so I could have some freedom in the inks.

Also played around with some custom brushes and paper textures to add the grainy effect in the coloring stage. Total time spent on this; about 3 hours.

Never been much of a gamer. I can't even remember the last time I played a game of Street Fighter. But I know a little bit about a little bit. I've always been a huge fan of the Street Fighter character designs and this version of Cammy is one of my favorites. Sorry for the lateness!

The Mighty Balrog by Samax Amen

I've never been much of a gamer, so I wasn't all that into this week's topic (Street Fighter), but I'm happy how my Balrog sketch came out... probably should have drawn him smashing someone in the face...
well, I'll save that for next time!
anyways, I drew this with a ballpoint pen and a watercolor marker (the original is blue) and fancied it up a little w/photoshop, cuz that's how the eff i roll!

Here ya go Ladies and Gents. here is this weeks sketch from yours truly. I chose Chun Li, simply for the fact that I have always liked her design. This week is a tad different though. Instead of using my typical inks for this, I tried out some nibs and quils that I purchased just today. This was my first shot at using quils to ink with, and for the most part, I am pretty pleased at this being my first run.

I’ve only played Street Fighter I (I know, I know) and these were my two favorite characters. I was big into games in my teens, but have little time for it now. Honestly, I was more of a Mortal Kombat kinda’ kid.

I decided to take a shot at one of the new Super Street Fighter IV characters--Juri Han. I liked her design, so here's a shot of her whooping Ken's ass. Didn't get a chance to color this as I'd originally wished, on account of my workload, so I threw down some quick halftones.

This week's theme is Street Fighter, so I went with a little Sakura practicing her fireball abilities! I was going back and forth between characters, it's really hard to pick one. Then, I kept thinking about Marvel vs. Capcom 2, and how much I'd like to draw those characters...but I had to force myself to pick somebody, so I went with Sakura!
